“Cards are a valuable commodity at the end of the day; how you differentiate them is what makes the difference,” says Riley. “That’s the big thing here – how you use your card.” Riley has a grocery card and one for Amazon; All these steps help him get more points.
“One of the biggest problems with rewards is that oftentimes, you go in with good intentions and you don’t get the full value of the rewards because you start tracking your earnings,” Riley says, meaning that cardholders start accumulating interest on the unpaid balance, then pay the interest and subtract the value they’ve earned with the rewards.
Riley points to one of the Apple Card’s failings: Apple sold too much. It’s silly, yes, but it’s never been so critical of the credit card industry because the average consumer has three or four cards per household: one for general purchases, one for emergencies, and one for travel.
Sara Rathner, credit card expert at NerdWallet, echoed this sentiment. “Apple Card is far from iPhone in terms of changing the world,” Rathner said: “It’s good; it’s a cashback card.” All these cards are there to build brand loyalty, he said. If you have more points with Hyatt, you can book a Hyatt stay on your next trip. If you make a lot of purchases with Samsung Wallet, it may prompt you to get a Galaxy Card.
Rathner says the 3 percent reward on purchases made using the Samsung Wallet app is a great value. If you pay to pay on the New York City subway with Samsung Wallet on your phone, for example, it’s 3 percent per ride, and “it could be mandatory.”
Although Rathner finds the Apple Card problematic, he gives credit to Apple for creating other products. For example, Apple allows you to see the interest rate and interest rate that you can qualify for a loan, which other credit cards offer. The app (and card) has a beautiful interface, the physical card is easy to activate with a tap on the iPhone, and cash rewards are deposited daily instead of waiting for a pay cycle.
“I think if other credit cards want to compete in that way and follow suit, I think it just makes credit cards better for consumers,” Rathner says. “We’ll see how this goes with people who have Samsung phones.”
