Although Apple Crumble is still a mystery, it is different from previous Happy Broccoli Games games, Duck Detectivehow a player solves cases in a small office. Here you are focusing on your family. “I love the idea of having a walking sim where you can open every drawer, every door, and see what’s behind it,” says founder and creative director Annika Maar. As you learn more about your family members’ various complaints and problems, the mystery slowly unravels.
After Duck Detective, the team wants to make a “sad grandfather” game – which would be surprising after the humor of the studio’s previous games. Apple Crumble starts out funny, says Maar, but the tone changes over the course of the game; It’s very difficult and sad: “I was very emotional about my grandfather’s death. There is some baggage there and I thought it would be interesting to explore that.”
You will take the plot by exploring things. Many things. The stories of Apple Crumble extend into various fictional stories set in the house. “There’s a movie that his uncle wrote that he believes will get money from investors and become great,” says Maar. “It’s just small things that I hope will make the world more reliable.”
The depth of subtle detail also applies to the artwork, which was inspired, in part, by the conceptual art of Puss in Boots. “In film and art, they use a lot of paint,” says Maar. “When you look at it from a distance it’s not immediately obvious, but when you look at it, you’re like, ‘Wow, there’s a lot of different colors in there. Your eyes connect together and it just makes it feel better. A little bit clinical. It’s a lot of fun to look at. It was a lot more work than I thought, but I think it was worth it.”
Maar is currently finalizing the script and will soon start recording the voice actors. Happy Broccoli is booking actors together so they can distract each other. After that, with a grandfather-killer among them, there are many conflicts to write.
