At least 25 people have died as floods and landslides hit northern and northeastern India, officials said.

Several incidents were reported over the weekend in Indian-administered Kashmir and northeastern Nagaland, after days of heavy rains, officials said on Monday.

In Kashmir, rain-related incidents in Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts have left at least 15 people dead, with several others reported missing, a senior police official said. In Nagaland, landslides triggered by incessant rains killed nine people.

“We have recovered four of the eight bodies, and the rescue operation is continuing,” Wennyei Konyak, a magistrate in Nagaland’s Mon district, told AFP, adding that at least 15 others were injured.

In Jammu, the floods in Rajouri caused extensive damage to property and people and disrupted many lives, according to a statement from the office of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Army personnel and state emergency responders rescued 11 people, including five children.

In neighboring Assam, one person died in flash floods on Sunday, according to the state’s disaster management agency, which said more than 57,000 people in seven districts had been affected.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of the possibility of heavy rains in Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days, and the monsoon will continue across the region for a week.

Officials also announced a temporary suspension of the annual Amarnath pilgrimage, which attracted more than 400,000 Hindus last year, and the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage in Jammu, citing the safety of devotees until the routes are known to be safe.

Floods are another disaster that occurs every year in India during the monsoon months, which follow the region’s hot weather, and many parts of the country are also experiencing water shortages and droughts.
