To pay or not to pay? Ransomware operations have victims facing difficult decisions



Almost half of the companies affected by a cybersecurity ransom may pay a ransom to free their data or systems, according to a 2025 study from cyber security group Sophos, while the average number required is rising.

Around the world, some communities are responding by banning payments to hackers. In the UK, for example, the government is pushing ahead with plans to ban public sector and key law enforcement bodies around the world – including the National Health Service, local councils and schools – from paying.

The potential veto comes as ransomware hackers have become more sophisticated and cautious in targeting companies, particularly small and medium-sized businesses that are at risk over time.
