Andy Burnhamnicknamed the “King of the North”, he will become the prime minister of the UK on Monday after winning the leadership of Labor after the resignation of Keir Starmer.
Burnham left Westminster nearly a decade ago to become mayor of Greater Manchester and returned to Parliament a few weeks ago before taking the Labor leadership. He will be the 59th Prime Minister and the seventh to be Number 10 in the last decade.

Who is Andy Burnham?
Burnham, 56, served in several Labor governments before leaving Westminster in 2017 to become mayor of Greater Manchester.
There, he emerged as one of Britain’s best-known politicians who was known as the “King of the North” for his defense of the North of England during the COVID-19 pandemic and his campaign for more money in the region.
Known for his approachable style, Burnham has often distanced himself from Westminster politicians. “When I say I’m going to do politics differently, I mean it,” he said during his presidency.
Aides say the style has helped make him one of Labour’s most popular figures. But now he will face the same challenges that Keir Starmer faced, including a sluggish economy and high cost of living.
When will Burnham become Prime Minister?
Burnham is expected to become Prime Minister on Monday, after formally accepting King Charles III’s invitation to form a government.
He will take office after Starmer gives his consent to the King at Buckingham Palace. Burnham will then go to 10 Downing Street to give his first speech as PM and start choosing his cabinet.
The King invites Burnham to form a government
After accepting Starmer’s resignation, King Charles invited Burnham to Buckingham Palace and asked him to form a government. Burnham was becoming prime minister when he accepted the King’s invitation.
This ceremony is known as “kissing hands”, although modern ministers only greet the king during the audience.
The new PM arrives in Downing Street
He then heads to his home at 10 Downing Street, where he is expected to make his first speech in office. All results are televised and are over within a few hours.
Unlike the US, where presidential transitions last for several months, the British prime minister has only a few hours on transition day to complete his move from Downing Street, with much packing to do before it happens.

He puts his government
Once elected, he will start naming his ministers, including senior ministers such as the chancellor, foreign secretary and home secretary. His government will take effect immediately, without the need for an inauguration or a parliamentary vote.
Interest is expected to quickly turn to Burnham’s proposal.
According to multiple media reports, one of his first major decisions could be to place Thames Water into a Special Administration Regime, bringing the much-contested company under public administration temporarily while it undergoes restructuring.
In his first speech as Labor leader, Burnham promised to create a “new direction” for Britain, saying that his government would focus on making life cheaper and reducing regional inequality.
“This change today is the most important moment in our politics for 40 years. It will lead us to a world where life is expensive and all people and places are removed from where they are now.”
He also promised to control all parts of the United Kingdom.
“I will be the leader of North, South, East and West, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.”
Why is there no election?
The British parliamentary system allows the ruling party to change its leader without holding an election. Because Labor has a majority in the House of Commons, its new leader becomes prime minister. The next general election is not due until 2029, five years after Labor won the 2024 general election.
Keir Starmer announced on June 22 that he would step down as Labor leader after less than two years. His tenure has come under increasing pressure following political controversy, including his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the United States – despite his close friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Pressure mounted after Labor suffered a landslide defeat in May’s local elections. When Burnham returned to Parliament after winning the election, many Labor MPs backed him as Starmer’s successor.
Starmer’s resignation sparked a Labor leadership race. Under party rules, candidates must get the support of at least one in five Labor MPs to enter the race. Burnham easily met the limit and, with no candidates standing, was elected unopposed.
