England beat India by 27 runs in a run-fest at Lord’s to win the ODI series 2-1 cricket news

Ben Duckett’s century and Sam Curran’s late burst of wickets propelled England to a 27-run series win over India in the third ODI at Lord’s.

Duckett scored a brilliant 141 off 135 balls, his highest individual ODI score at Lord’s and his fourth century in the format, before Jos Buttler’s 41 off just 13 balls helped England to a mammoth 388-run win over India.

Rohit Sharma led the chase with a magnificent 138 off 110 deliveries, registering his 34th ODI century and a century partnership with Shubman Gill (77) and Virat Kohli (74) to keep India firmly in the game.

India were 303-2 and needed 84 off the last 39 balls when a decisive seven-ball spell saw Curran (4-75) dismiss Ishan Kishan (14), Shreyas Iyer (0) and Kohli, halting India’s momentum as their chase fell 27 runs short.

After losing the series opener at Edgbaston by six wickets, England sealed a 2–1 ODI series win against the world’s top-ranked team, whitewashing India in their 4–0 T20I series.

How England won the ODI series against India

Harry Brook completed a successful toss clean sweep in his third toss of the series and his decision to bat paid immediate dividends as England’s openers were left rudderless without injured pace talisman Jasprit Bumrah in the Indian attack.

India were made to toil by England’s record 192 for the first wicket before Rohit Sharma was picked up at Bethel Cow Corner nine runs short of an emotional century on a day to remember Sir Garfield Sobers at Lord’s.

Duckett started after reaching his century to surpass Sir Viv Richards’ unbeaten 138 against England in 1979, hitting 18 fours and a six and registering a new individual highest score in ODIs at Lord’s before being caught and bowled by Prince Yadav.

Joe Root scored his sixth successive ODI half-century before Duckett was dismissed, with four fours and three sixes from Jos Buttler as England plundered 82 runs in the last five overs to finish on 387-3 after a dominant 50 overs with the bat.

It would require India to chase the second-highest run in ODI history to win the series, but confidence grew that it could be possible when Rohit and Gill put on an opening stand of 147 runs.

Gill suffered a recurrence of the cramp that forced him to retire in the first ODI at Edgbaston and the India captain was trapped lbw after four overs of treatment as Adil Rashid claimed a crucial breakthrough with his first wicket of the series.

A 113-run partnership with Rohit Kohli brought up his eighth ODI century on English soil in 84 balls, as the two legendary Indian batsmen sought a thrilling final chapter in what could be their final international appearance in England.

Bethel (1-49) bowled Rohit, making a crucial breakthrough to reduce India to 260-2, but Kohli’s first fifty at Lord’s kept the visitors on track in any format.

But Curran’s late burst derailed India’s chase as they were restricted to 360-7 from 50 overs, with England claiming their fifth win from six matches and only their second ODI series win over India since 2012.

‘Proud’ Brooke tastes series win

England captain Harry Brook:

“I am very proud. We fought hard, communicated well like we did in T20Is and won the series against the world number one team.

“We want to set a template with the bat and the way Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethel started with the bat was fantastic.

“No wickets after 30 overs and they don’t seem to be taking risks.”

Gill regrets England’s late innings run

Indian captain Shubman Gill:

“I think we were in the game till the 45th over (of England’s innings). We conceded too many runs in the last three overs and that’s where the game got away from us.

“We thought if we had a wicket after 40 overs, we would be in the game. At the end of the powerplay, we tried to reduce the required run rate.”

ROOT: England are emerging as an ODI team

Player of the Series, Joe Root (249 runs in three matches and never got out):

“To bounce back from our loss in the first ODI and beat the number one team is the most rewarding thing.

“To back up a great series win in Sri Lanka this shows we are going in the right direction in a really positive way.
