Spain and Lamine Yamal have grown through the tournament to leave him with the world at his feet and two of football’s greatest prizes in his pocket.

Lamine Yamal is yet to lose in 28 competitive matches for his country. He started 13 games in major tournaments and won all of them – the longest 100% win streak of any European player across major tournaments while starting.
He is also the fourth and fifth teenager – along with 19-year-old Spain teammate Pau Cubersi – to start and win a World Cup final after Pele for Brazil in 1958, Italy defender Giuseppe Bergomi in 1982 and Kylian Mbappe for France in 2018.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente spoke afterwards of his “heartfelt gratitude” to Lamine Yamal.
“He has played great football which will help him mature and become an even bigger footballer,” he said.
“He really sacrificed himself for the collective good. That’s very important in my squad. He played a great World Cup in my opinion.”
And it’s not just a special talent, it’s a special talent with a special temperament.
He rejected the Argentine’s obvious attempts to intimidate him, especially in regular close contact with Nicolas Tagliafico.
Former England goalkeeper and BBC Sport pundit Joe Hart sums it up well.
“Only Lamin Yamal did not react,” he said. “He stood by it. He didn’t flinch and he didn’t back down. His whole team tried to destroy him.
“He was just really calm. It was a really great performance from him.
“Lamine Yamal is 19 years old. What a beautiful day for him. He is 19 years old and finished football.”
With virtually his entire career ahead of him, and considering the experience and influence of Spain teammates like his captain and player of the tournament Rodri, Lamine Yamal is likely to add more such success before he’s done.
