England international Jide Spence has said his team-mates are keen to continue working with “great manager” Thomas Tuchel after the 2026 World Cup.
England took third place in the World Cup by defeating France early on Sunday in a thrilling match that ended (6-4).
Tuchel has a contract with the Three Lions until the 2028 European Championship. But he was under pressure after England’s 2-1 World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina..
The Tottenham left-back, who was a standout star in England’s World Cup campaign, was asked if the players wanted to continue working with Tuchel and he said:
He added, according to the publication of the newspaper.subway“This was not what we wanted, but these are steps forward. It’s the best result we’ve achieved since 1966, so it’s a step in the right direction and we hope we can get a positive result in the next tournament.”
He continued. “I think we have to learn from this tournament. We learned a lot and performed well, and that’s all we need to take advantage of in the next tournament we play and the next matches we play as a team. We just have to learn from this experience and hope to achieve a positive result.”
Spence was asked if the memorable win over France was in response to the criticism he received after the defeat to Argentina, and while he backs his manager, the Tottenham player dismissed the idea, saying media and fan opinion had little effect on the team.
“No, I don’t think we really focus on external noise. We just have to focus on ourselves and our chain and control what we can control,” he explained.
He noted: “We were disappointed to make it to the semi-finals, but today we showed a great mentality to win. All credit to the team.”
Asked if he could envision himself starring for England at the World Cup, while just two years ago he was struggling to make progress in the Premier League, he said: “Yes, I can.”
He continued: I have always believed in my abilities, and difficult moments do not determine my fate. So I worked hard and always believed that I would get to this place.”
He concluded. “I can only thank God, it’s a great honor to be part of this team.”
