History warns… Spain and Argentina fear the curse of the first goal

Spain have achieved a remarkable feat so far at the 2026 World Cup, having not conceded a single minute in any of their seven matches at the tournament.

The number puts La Roja in a rare historical position as only two teams in history have ever won the World Cup without a result being suspended for the entire tournament: Italy in 1938 and 1982 and Germany in 1990, according to statistics network Opta.

The network adds that the team to score first in a World Cup final has lifted the trophy in 6 of the last 7 times, with the only exception during this period being the 2006 final, when France drew 1-1 with Italy before losing on penalties.

Argentina qualified for the finals of the 2026 World Cup after topping their group, then saw off Cape Verde (3-2) in the round of 32 and Egypt by the same score in the round of 16, before beating Switzerland (3-1) in the quarter-finals and England (2-1) in the semi-finals.

Spain also topped their group, then eliminated Austria in the round of 32 (3-0) and defeated Portugal (1-0) in the round of 16, before beating Belgium (2-1) in the quarter-finals and France (2-0) in the semi-finals.

Lionel Scaloni’s side are looking for a fourth World Cup title in their history after winning it in 1978, 1986 and 2022, while Spain are aiming for their second World Cup title after lifting the trophy for the first and last time in 2010.
