Rory McIlroy accused Bryson DeChambeau of holding the Open Championship “hostage” during a dramatic scene at Royal Birkdale on Friday evening.
DeChambu Two strokes are awarded during the second round to “unscientifically improve his lie” before hitting his second shot in the fifth.
The two-time US Open champion was involved in a heated and lengthy discussion with R&A rules officials before the penalty was imposed, which dropped him to three off the lead at five under par for the tournament.
“I think there’s no doubt he’s improved the line of his backswing,” said world number two McIlroy, who was clinched the 2024 US Open title by DeChambeau.
“Whether it was careless or intentional, I don’t think it matters.
Asked specifically about the scene involving DeChambeau and tournament officials when they returned to the scene of the infraction after the round, McIlroy added: “I’m not going to pretend to defend Bryson.
“I don’t particularly like him. I think a lot of it is performative. I think a lot of it is for attention.
“To hold the tournament hostage like that, and all of us, the players, the volunteers, all waiting for him to leave, I didn’t think it was a great look.”
