Hours away from tomorrow night’s crucial showdown between Argentina and Spain on Sunday, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni finds himself in a difficult family situation that could turn the joy of a second title into a family headache.
Scalloni revealed in pre-match media statements that his Spanish wife, Elisa Montero, and his children, born in Mallorca, will stand by him despite their affiliation, while his wife’s family lives in confusion and division.
The Argentinian coach said. “Of course, my wife and children will be with us. Even though my wife is Spanish, she knows very well what I’m going through and what I’m going through, and my children know it even better,” referring to the family support he’s enjoying towards a historic achievement that could give him a second world title.
Scalloni met his wife in Mallorca in 2008 and they later gave birth to their two sons, Ian and Noah, in 2012 and 2016 on the same Spanish island, giving them both Spanish citizenship.
Despite their nationalities, the two children were seen at the 2022 World Cup celebrations in Qatar and the 2024 Copa America, wearing Argentina’s blue and white jersey and posing for pictures with players who won both tournaments, a sight that reflected their commitment to their father’s career.
“There is also a family in Mallorca who are definitely confused. It’s a difficult situation for them and I understand that. But in any case, they will be happy,” referring to his wife’s relatives, who hope their team will win a second world title.
Scalloni is aiming for a historic achievement in Argentine football by leading Tango to a second consecutive title, a rare feat achieved by only a few teams in World Cup history, but this footballing glory could come at the expense of his in-laws’ home in Mallorca.
