The US military has announced that it is carrying out its seventh night of airstrikes against Iran since US President Donald Trump announced the end of the temporary ceasefire agreement.
The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that “the attack was designed to degrade Iran’s military capabilities as a commander-in-chief.”
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said two oil tankers exploded in the Sea of Hormuz as they passed through mines in the shipping channel – a claim later dismissed by Centcom as false.
According to Iranian media reports, explosions were heard in the central city of Yazd and Qeshm Island and in the coastal port of Bandar Abbas.
Iran’s state-run Fars Agency said two oil tankers exploded and caught fire while passing through a mining route south of the Sea of Hormuz.
Centcom later posted on X: “Like most IRGC claims, this is false.”
Shipping traffic along the coast of Hormuz has largely ground to a halt amid ongoing tit-for-tat attacks by US and Iranian forces. In normal times, the coast holds a fifth of the world’s oil and liquid natural gas supplies.
On Friday, Iran’s armed forces attacked several US military installations in the Gulf region in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan and – for the first time – Syria, claims the United States denied.
Earlier, Kuwaiti officials said Iranian drones wounded several of its soldiers and damaged power plants and water storage facilities.
Several US service members were injured in Iran’s attacks on two Jordanian camps last week, sources told the BBC’s US affiliate CBS.
Washington has denied that Tehran has previously struck civilian infrastructure in Iran, including bridges, railway stations and airports. Regional officials in the affected region of Hormozgan province said seven people were killed in the attack.
BBC News and BBC Persian have confirmed images of the damage to the Garib Bridge, after late-night videos showed a ball of flames above it.
Daylight images show a damaged stretch of road with debris surrounding the broken bridge.
A White House spokesman told the BBC that the United States “only attacked military targets, including military logistics infrastructure.”
Tensions over the future of the Strait of Hormuz marked a week of overnight U.S. strikes on Friday after peace talks with Iran collapsed, derailing efforts to reach a permanent ceasefire.
