The Clayton by-election attracted 34 candidates

34 candidates have been confirmed for the Clayton constituency due to the resignation of Nigel Farage.

The Reform UK leader increased his funding and scrutiny of Parliament, but was again stalled.

The list contains 20 independent and several joke candidates, including three from the Monster Raving Loony Party, with none from the main Westminster parties. Voters will go to the polls on August 13.

It is believed to be the highest number of candidates to contest a by-election in modern times, Tinring District Council announced.

It is understood that the previous record was 26 candidates. In July 2008, Haltemprice and Howden sat by by-elections, which were instigated by Tory Sir David Davies in his own seat and ignored by the main Westminster parties.
