Visitors enter through the mezzanine, which means they can see the entire length of the work from a distance.
After that they walk – approximately at a certain speed – closer to the step; 58 scenes of events dating back to 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, complete with 626 figures, 202 horses and six women.
We got a glimpse of one of those women as the security guards working on the tape removed the current part of the cover to protect it from the light.
It shows a woman fleeing her home with her daughter as Norman soldiers start the torch during their harrowing journey to fight Harold for the throne. Human interaction that defines the horrors of war.
Horton-Insch called it “one of the saddest moments on tape.”
“Her experience, if you will, is every woman’s experience, which many English women, including perhaps the English women who made the tapestry, lived and experienced.”
Lewis told me there are still many mysteries about the tapes. I wanted it checked about one room – unfortunately for our visit – which is believed to be Harold, with an arrow in his eye at the Battle of Hastings.
Some historians believe the bow was added during the nineteenth century restoration. Lewis agrees that it is a later addition.
“The original tapestry pictures don’t show the arrow in the eye… My feeling is that the arrow is based on a 12th century tradition that Harold died with an arrow in his eye. But I’m glad I was proven wrong.”
