Is America ready for a Jeep-style EV that can park itself?

And it stops itself using teleoperation, with the goal of reaching Level 4, autonomous driving.

In terms of hardware, the Chip runs the wheel motors with a 15 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that can be charged overnight on a standard 110-volt home, or in 4 hours using a Level 2/240-volt charger through the NACS port – although on its website, the company says that charging times are “estimated,” pending the final result. LFP gives about 100 kilometers, but that’s just an estimate. The Chip comes in four- and six-seat configurations, with the former starting at $15,000 and the latter at $18,000. You can reserve one today for $250, and the company says it will start shipping in 2027.

Microcars may be the end in the US, but Golf cart sales have been booming since the pandemicsaid Chip Motors CEO Jameson Detweiler. But Chip is more than just a golf cart. It is said that the compact EV was designed to capture the feeling of freedom associated with scooters and bicycles and remove much of the “emotional” that comes with owning a traditional car.

“It’s not small, it’s bright,” Detweiler said. “And it’s designed to be, like, very functional. And also, like, cool!”

A serial entrepreneur, Detweiler sold his camera technology company to one of Europe’s largest e-scooter manufacturers in 2022 before starting to follow Chip, which he says he has been working on for about 15 years. The idea was born from the conversations he had while living in a house destroying people in San Francisco around what makes cities and transportation. From there, Detweiler said he came to believe that using large, heavy, expensive vehicles for short local trips was not practical. And as autonomous technology develops, he said, transportation systems will become more efficient at matching the car to the job.

Beyond that, Chip is designed to be interesting. Detweiler said he wanted the car to be unique and expressive rather than cheap. But the lower cost of ownership, from zero dollars spent on gas to lower insurance costs, could make the Chip a better choice for a variety of buyers.

Then there’s the self-driving part – or, for starters, the remote control part called “Chip Go!” The pitch is that owners will be able to order their Chip EVs with the click of an app, or even a voice command. Similarly, they can tell it to stop on its own or send it to do other things without someone driving it.

Detweiler’s theory is that driving is fun, but parking is not. Speaking from her experience living in Miami with two young children, she says the worst part of any trip is driving parking mirrors, unloading children and strollers, and making multiple trips between the car and the destination. The chip will eventually reach Level 4 autonomy, he predicts, but for now it will need remote users to use it.

On the subject of concern, Detweiler explained that mobile networks already know how to reduce latency spikes by intelligently managing their links. And because Chip’s cars travel under 25 mph on neighborhood roads, teleporting is easier than driving a high-speed car, he argued. But he declined to elaborate on the phone’s connectivity, saying the company intends to continue developing it over time. That said, Chip wants to take responsibility for his cars while they are being driven remotely.

Chip’s introductory video shows a funny scene in which the EV responds to conversational instructions and creates funny scenes. Detweiler said this wasn’t Hollywood magic, explaining a system where Chip participates in family conversations, syncs with calendars, monitors traffic, and reminds owners when they need to leave earlier than planned.

But the question remains: Is America ready for the microcar revolution? Detweiler thinks so, pointing to the company’s research on exports and sales, which says that the sector has grown by about 50 percent annually from 2021. However, Chip has bigger ambitions, looking into more weather-protected vehicles for the winter and multi-generation versions.

Unlike most current EVs, reaching 60 mph would take “a few minutes,” Detweiler joked, but the car would be capable of autonomy and everyday use. Today, it can be a good second car. But with Waymo and other robotaxis revolutionizing transportation in the future, it might be the only car you’ll ever need.
