Still worried, France and England meet in a World Cup game they would not want – a the third race offering more money than a symbolic bronze medal.
list of things 3end of series
Strong favorites to add a third World Cup title, in the form of France were defeated by the brave Spain in the semifinals, while England’s difficult wait of sixteen years continued with a late and brutal defeat in Argentina.
A day before the world tunes in to watch the all-important final, France and England will play their final game in North America, hoping to put an end to their disappointing campaign – if at all.
Al Jazeera tells you everything about the third race:
There is nothing to play for in the third leg, and France, who have won two of the three playoffs, know how unpleasant this game can be.
But Saturday’s match has good reason to give it another shot – it will be coach Didier Deschamps’ last game in charge of France.
Deschamps – who lost his mother during the group stage – has been France coach for 14 years, during which he guided them to the 2018 World Cup title, the 2022 final and this year’s final.
Under the 57-year-old, Les Bleus have established themselves as one of the most inconsistent sides in the world over the past decade, and a third-place finish would be the best way, as it stands, to draw the curtains on his illustrious career.

Apart from the management’s farewell, there will be many reasons to celebrate within the French camp. Captain and star striker Kylian Mbappe has the chance to win the Golden Boot and make or break the record for the regular season.
Mbappe, who currently holds the Golden Boot, is second in this year’s competition Behind Lionel Messi, both tied with eight goals, and the Argentine’s four assists puts him ahead of Mbappe, who has three. The Frenchman is just one behind Messi for the most World Cup goals (21).
If Mbappe beats Messi to the award, the 27-year-old will become the first player to win the Golden Boot twice.
It’s not often that you see a World Cup team say that they are not looking forward to playing on the biggest stadium in the world.
But competing for third place in football is not like podium results in track and field. It is, for a moment, an exciting moment for many teams – especially those in the form of England and France.
It leaves players feeling very close, yet still.
“None of our players and none of the French players want to play this game,” England coach Thomas Tuchel said after the loss to Argentina. “They want to play in the final. We have given everything to achieve this. Everyone plays to win the World Cup, but that’s how it is.”
France’s Deschamps echoed the same sentiment, saying he had no choice but to show up.
“We are not where we wanted or expected. Disappointments are in line with our ambitions, but we have to accept it,” he added.

The Opta supercomputer has selected France as favorites to secure third place, winning the game within 90 minutes in 50.7 percent of the 25,000 pre-match predictions.
The next best result is England, at 25.6 percent, closely followed by the 90-minute draw, which has a 23.7% chance.

This is the fourth World Cup meeting between France and England – the Three Lions won the first two (2-0 in 1966, 3-1 in 1982), but France won 2-1 in their most recent meeting in the 2022 quarterfinals.
Overall, England have won their last nine games against France (D2 L6), winning 2-0 in a friendly in November 2015.

William Saliba (back) and Brice Samba (calf) are out for France, while England’s Jordan Henderson (arm) is injured and Reece James (muscle) is a doubt.
With the title still out of reach, both sides are expected to be more flexible and give game time to players who have had limited minutes, although Mbappe should start in France to shoot for the Golden Boot.
England’s Harry Kane or Jude Bellingham, who have six goals each, could play in the final bid for the award.
