Uganda suspends school trips after bus accidents stemming from waterfall tour; at least a dozen were injured.

20 schoolchildren have died after the bus they were traveling in crashed on their way back from a school trip in eastern Uganda, authorities have said.

Uganda suspended school trips on Friday after the accident, which also killed an adult on Thursday night.

Three other adults and more than a dozen children were injured, officials said.

The King David Junior School bus will return to Kampala at Sipi Falls, the Ugandan police said.

The accident happened near Chekwatit village in Kapchorwa district, the police added.

An initial investigation showed that the driver lost control, and the bus left the road and overturned after hitting a large rock, police said.

The Minister of Local Government Affairs in Uganda Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi said on X that more than 28 children are receiving treatment in hospitals, nine of them are sick.

Authorities have not yet released the names or ages of the children killed. The deceased elders are believed to be the founders of the school and its principal.

Residents arrived in front of government rescue teams and began to pick up victims, according to the Uganda Red Cross Society. Some survivors were brought to hospitals in trucks.

The village where the police say the accident happened is near the border of Uganda and Kenya, about 300 kilometers from Kampala.

The government announced that it has suspended “all school trips and field trips, effective immediately and until further notice”.

Uganda faces frequent fatal accidents. Its roads are among the most dangerous in a region that has the worst safety record in the world. Accidents are often related to speeding, poorly maintained vehicles and bad roads.

Earlier this month alone, 14 people died when a bus and a car collided in a remote area in northern Uganda.

In October, 46 people were killed when several vehicles, including two buses, collided on Kapala-Gulu highway.
