A former detective has been appointed as the first reform UK Police and Crime Commissioner.
Colin Sutton, who has led several high-profile homicide investigations during his 30-year career, was confirmed as Norfolk’s new commissioner on Friday after 32,647 people voted.
Sutton won with a majority of 14,299 votes, coming in second to Conservative Party candidate Matthew Taylor.
The by-election was held following the resignation of Labor Party Commissioner Sarah Taylor, who left the party in protest. Voter turnout was 17 percent.
Speaking on stage after the win, Sutton said: “I will pay back the trust that the people of Norfolk have put in” and that they will “go back to work on Monday”.
“I’m very happy. Police is my life and it’s the best job. I believe I can make a difference and make things better,” he said.
This is expected to be the last Police and Crime Commissioner election, unless someone steps down or otherwise leaves the role.
The police and crime commissioners are to be abolished as part of plans to devolve their powers to Norfolk and Suffolk and create a mayoralty covering the two counties.
