A $10K Bounty Wants to Make Sony’s PlayStation 5 a PC Again

Use your PlayStation playing games is good. But what if you can use your Sony console What’s the vibe? and your AI assistants Linux instead? That’s what an ownership association is for Feathers wants it to happen, and is willing to pay $10,000 to make sure it happens.

Fulu puts up the first $10,000, then will match donations up to another $10K. Since its inception by the end of 2025Fulu has made two grants so far—one to clean up Google’s history Nest thermostats and another DRM support Molecular air purifiers.

Tuesday, Freedom he announced the good news which would reward hackers who can unlock Sony’s owners’ locks PlayStation 5 consoles and, in theory, allow the user to install an operating system like Linux on the console.

“Rebuild PlayStation computers,” O’Reilly tells WIRED. “Let’s go back to computing—the general purpose is to understand that if we have the tools, we can put the software we want.”

In early July, Sony announced that it was ability to create physical discs for all the new games on its PS5 console. “Many PlayStation owners are worried about what will happen to their games,” says O’Reilly. “They’re afraid they could be pulled over at any moment.”

As with all Flu goals, there is risk involved. Violation of company software restrictions may violate Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Actlaws passed in 1998 that prohibit users from allowing digital locks on computer programs. It is a law punishable by fines and jail time.

To win Flu benefits, a person has to prove that they have a problem, but they don’t need to disclose it to the public if they are worried about legal consequences. This means that even if the PS5 jailbreak is completed, it won’t be available for mass use. Fulu says the idea is less about creating a problem using the PS5 console, and more about encouraging people to look different from what they have on their devices.

“Our property rights are constantly being eroded,” O’Reilly said. “It’s time to have a conversation and get back to the idea that computers are computers and we should use them as we please.”
