Apple and Google they were ordered to remove the programs they could “nudify” or “undress” people and told them they should stop profiting from the harmful technology, according to cease-and-desist letters sent to the companies seen by WIRED.
On Thursday, San Francisco city attorney David Chiu sent notices to Apple and Google to remove 13 face-swapping apps from their stores, which allow users to create AI-generated nude photos. The letters say the Silicon Valley giants should stop “supporting and abetting” the sale of pornographic images and “remove” business relationships with software developers.
“Making inappropriate intimate photos is illegal, harmful, and unacceptable,” Chiu told WIRED. The city attorney, whose office has taken action against 16 well-known websites, says that Apple and Google may have “made millions of dollars in fines” from programs that offer pornography, and they need to improve their control systems to prevent them from appearing in their stores in the first place.
“These companies have a responsibility to make sure that the apps on their platforms don’t support sexual exploitation,” says Chiu. The city’s official documents say California law prohibits it support services which makes deep porn. Apple did not comment before the release.
