The global air quality monitoring company IQAir has ranked Detroit, Toronto and Minneapolis as the cities with the worst air quality in the world right now.
Wildfire smoke is dangerous to humans because it contains a mixture of very small pollutant particles such as PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide.
New York State Health Commissioner Jim McDonald said in a public address video on social media: “When these particles enter our system, they go down into our lungs, into our small airways and … cause inflammation.”
The smoke can aggravate existing respiratory, heart, kidney and eye conditions. According to the World Health Organization, External.
Emergency responders and vulnerable groups such as those with chronic illnesses and children — who are closest to the ground where the smoke can sink — are at risk.
Governments issue warnings based on the level of air quality that people should be aware of. For example, an orange alert means people are advised to:
Avoid strenuous outdoor activities
Stay indoors and close the windows
Wear a well-fitting N95 mask
Seek medical attention for symptoms including shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and chest pain
KN95 or N95 masks should be able to filter 95% of fine particles – although there are still risks.
Make sure it is government certified as there are fake copies being sold online.
Many cities have activated their air quality emergency protocols and are distributing masks at local centers.
