Bradford Bulls 12-26 Wakefield Trinity: Darryl Powell’s side fight back to win and fifth successive Super League win | Rugby League News

In-form Wakefield moved into second place in the Betfred Super League as they battled to a 26-12 win over Bradford at Odsal.

Trinity, chasing a fifth win in a row, got off to a flying start when Tom Johnstone headed in a corner to score the opening try inside two minutes.

Bradford looked to regroup after losing Logan Lewis to injury in training.

It was conceded when he collected a high kick to bundle over Isaiah Vagana and Bradford’s Caleb Ekins before getting the Bulls on the board after 21 minutes.

Ryan was soon sent to the sin bin for an in-air clash with Wakefield full-back Josh Rourke and Trinity made their advantage count as Will Tate got the ball to extend the lead on the half hour.

Bulls saw second-row Dan Russell go for assessment on a head injury – he was later taken to hospital for further assessment for an eye problem sustained in the collision – before a penalty from Luke Hooley reduced the deficit to 10-6 at half-time.

Jay Pitts burst through a defensive gap for another Wakefield try after the restart, Ryan then saw his effort ruled out for a knock-on. The Bulls, however, rallied again when Jayden Nikorima offloaded to Chris Atkin, Hooley’s conversion reducing the gap to four points after 52 minutes.

Bradford thought they had another try just over the hour after Nikorima reached over, but Rourke slipped to block the ball with his knee and the video referee upheld the on-field decision.

Wakefield finally stemmed the relentless flow of pressure when a long video review cleared a try from Rourke in the corner after a high kick on the line.

With three minutes remaining, Harvey Smith fired home from close range to put Barca ahead of Trinity Wigan, who have a match in hand.
