As the two sides continue to fight for control of the Strait of Hormuz, the United States launched a new attack on Iran for the sixth night in a row, its military said.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Thursday that the strikes were intended to “further degrade Iran’s military capabilities”.
Iranian state media reported that US missiles hit the coast of Hormuz near the Gulf island of Qeshm, as well as Bandar Abbas and Bushahr – a nuclear power plant.
This comes after the two sides exchanged fire overnight, with renewed fighting further undermining their earlier agreement to end hostilities.
White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said on Thursday that US President Donald Trump remains open to talks with Iran.
“The president is responsible for going back on his words to the United States. But at the same time, he is always open to diplomacy,” she told reporters.
Iran said it still wants to make an agreement with the US, “We are talking, but still the president will not allow them to fire on ships without paying the consequences.”
As the attacks escalated, the Strait of Hormuz – a vital waterway off Iran’s coast – remained closed in response to Tehran’s US and Israeli attacks.
Earlier on Thursday, Tehran hit US military bases in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain, while the United States launched a six-hour wave of airstrikes at several locations in the Gulf.
Those exchanges came after Trump warned Iran to “behave better” or take further military action if Iran does not return to negotiations.
Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, told state media that Tehran has no reason to honor any deal that is not beneficial to the country.
He added that Iran’s national security is monitoring what he described as an “Iranian arrangement” in the Sea of Hormuz.
