T-Mobile has suspended free upgrades for long-term subscribers as part of a push to move to new plans, sparking complaints from customers yesterday. T-Mobile acknowledged the problem and blamed it on technical errors that it is trying to fix.
The change to the forced plan was controversial at first, especially since long-term users were hit with a $6 per line increase. Unexpected loss of free lines for some of the users can raise prices by a significant amount if the change is not implemented.
There is good news. T-Mobile told Ars today that it was a mistake and the company is working to fix the problem. Of course, it is not always easy for telecom customers to find the right solution even if the company admits the mistake publicly. But based on T-Mobile’s statement today, we believe that the company will fix the problem for all affected customers with as few problems as possible.
