From Gareth Southgate to Thomas Tuchel – Has anything changed for England?

What’s striking is that despite both managers starting with opposite tactical views, there are clear similarities in both their seasons, much to Tuchel’s dismay.

“The result is fantastic but I’m not happy with the performance,” Tuchel said after England’s win over Norway.

All this suggests that the principles he wanted to see on his side were not in sight.

Both goals against Norway came in moments of brilliant individual scoring against disorganized defences.

A goal kick that fell short and landed at the feet of Elliott Anderson saw England take control of the Norwegian side’s rigid 4-5-1 formation and direct running and quick passing balls.

The winner came from a corner in the second half before Rodgers curled a long shot into Bellingham’s path.

Those goals feel more Southgate than Tuchel – player-led, intuitive and a little chaotic rather than repetitive, drilled and coordinated.
