New York Governor Kathy Hochul may have signed a moratorium on new AI data centers in the state, but she is not opposed to using the technology. At the time of communication with Bloomberg‘s A lot of oddities In the podcast, Hochul said his team is using “AI to analyze every law, rule, (and) policy” to look at old laws.
Some of the old laws cited by Hochul in the interview include the $25 fee required to take dog hunting, or the fact that pregnant women need a permit to work after midnight. Hochul added that it would “probably have taken five years for staff” to review all the laws in the state, but with AI, his team “did it in a few months.” This will allow Hochul and state agencies to “remove” these old laws, he said.
Earlier this week, New York became the first country to suspend on a new hyperscale data center for one year. Meanwhile, state lawmakers are preparing to come up with legislation to protect the public from rising utility bills and environmental threats posed by big data centers.
“I want a government that’s not behind you but on your side, and the use of AI has been powerful in doing that,” Hochul said. Bloomberg. “I think every government should use this… I’m going to make a big difference using the power of AI.”
