Behind the scenes of the last hours before the departure of the Tunisian coach
Heavy defeat was not the only shock. A month after coaching the Tunisian national team in the heart of the 2026 World Cup, France’s Sabri Lamouchi has broken his silence, revealing scenes from the Carthage Eagles’ dark night and scathingly criticizing the Tunisian federation’s treatment of him.
In his first appearance since his departure, on the podcast »CampoLamucci recounted the details of the hours following the brutal defeat to Sweden in the group stage of the World Cup.
“I did not receive any official message from the Tunisian Football Federation informing me of the dismissal decision, rather, I learned about it on my personal phone.”
The French coach added. “I woke up early to find 27 missed calls from my family and friends. It looks like the federation released an official statement announcing my departure. It was the beginning of the end.”
Lamouchi went on to recount the scenes at the national team headquarters, saying: “The next day I went to training and some players came up to me and said that we will go through this stage together.”
Lamouchi concluded his speech with a brief comment summarizing his tenure with the Tunisian national team, where he said: “No coach can succeed under these conditions.”
The Tunisian Football Federation announced the sacking of Lamouchi midway through the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage following the team’s disappointing results in the tournament.
