A pink-orange-lipped and black-faced monkey from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been confirmed as a species new to science.
It was spotted hiding in a thicket of trees in the Lemon National Park in the middle east of the country.
Conservationists reported seeing the animal in 2008. But it wasn’t until another sighting 10 years later that an international team set out to find and study the monkey.
Dr. Karen Lawrensen, Africa director of the Frankfurt Zoological Society, described the discovery as “amazing” and said that it still “shows that there is much more to be explored in the natural world.”
