Sadiq Khan among the 26 new peers to enter the masters

London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is one of 26 new peers to be given a seat in the House of Lords in Sir Keir Starmer’s final act as Prime Minister.

Sir Sadiq has been nominated to become Labor leader along with 15 others, including broadcaster June Sarpong and former trade union boss Christina McKenney.

The government also announced five new peers from the Liberal Democrats, three from the Conservatives and two members of the bench, former cabinet secretary Sir Chris Wormald and retired senior judge Sir Brian Levison.

The nominations come as Sir Kiir prepares to leave office on Monday, with Andy Burnham poised to become the next prime minister.

A government source hailed Sir Sadiq as a “fantastic mayor who has changed London for the better” and said friends “well deserved”.

“He cut violent crime to record lows, cleaned up the capital’s air, delivered the Elizabethan line, and rebuilt London council,” the source said.

Sir Sadiq, the mayor’s spokesman, said: “They are honored for their dedication to their peers.”

A spokeswoman for the mayor said: “He is excited about what he can offer in the coming years and will dedicate his time and energy to standing up for our city and building a fairer, safer and greener London for everyone.”

Members of the House of Lords are generally appointed by the King on the advice of the Prime Minister.

If a nominee passes the vetting, the lords’ appointments are formalized by the king.
