England v Argentina Player Ratings: DZ Spence brilliant for Three Lions but Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Harry Kane fail to deliver | football news

England exited the World Cup after losing 2-1 to Argentina in the semi-final in Atlanta. Here are England’s player ratings on a disappointing night for the Three Lions…

Jordan Pickford – 7

Made some key saves in the second half as England looked to hold on to their lead, but could do nothing about Enzo Fernandez’s late strike from distance and Lautaro Martinez’s winning header.

Reece James – 6

Another change from Thomas Tuchel and James was solid in his defensive duties. He didn’t get much chance to step up and show what he can do with his delivery, but it was an assured display. Finally substituted on 82 minutes as he had nothing more to give a reason for.

John Stones – 7

A really fighting performance from the former Man City defender, who hasn’t had much football this season. Ultimately, along with the rest of his defensive colleagues, they succumbed to Argentina’s pressure as Tuchel’s defensive strategy backfired.

Mark Guehy – 7

Another brave defensive performance but Argentina’s pressure proved too much for Guehi and his teammates.

DZ Spence – 8

A surprising inclusion from Tuchel but Spence was fantastic. It was a selection that paid dividends and his tackle to keep Giuliano Simeone’s shot away early in the second half was one of the moments of the match.

Elliott Anderson – 7

Lionel Messi was tasked with staying close and he did his job brilliantly, especially after picking up a first-half booking. He was heavily involved in a heated midfield battle and more than held his own against some world-class Argentina midfield operators.

Declan Rice – 5

The Arsenal midfielder is still not at his marauding best. Still, he has had a tough road since recovering from illness to break into the starting XI. His set-piece delivery against Norway was good but after winning the Premier League with Arsenal, Rice did not expect the tournament.

Morgan Rogers – 7

Given a chance to start on the right and with not much space on the pitch after the first half, he delivered the cross for Gordon’s goal. However, he faded badly as England’s defensive tactics failed to protect their lead.

Jude Bellingham – 6

Was targeted by Argentina and he failed to make the impact we’ve seen from him throughout the tournament.

Anthony Gordon – 7

Not the easiest game for the forward but he was in the right place at the right time to convert Rodgers’ cross into the England goal. England were substituted after trying to defend the lead by going defensive.

England fans across the country were roaring after Anthony Gordon put England ahead against Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.

Harry Kane – 5

The England captain had no impact on the game. England in particular plowed a real lonely furrow trying to protect a lead. England’s needs did not provide any outlet.

Sub

Ezri Konsa – 5

England wanted to see the game on for Gordon in the 73rd minute. A lack of quality in attack and his delivery allowed England to equalize late on.

And burn – 5

For James in the 82nd minute. The change didn’t work this time because it had no effect on either box.

Nico O’Reilly – 5

Reus’ substitution and his inability to block a cross lead to Argentina’s victory.

Ivan Toney and Marcus Rashford – N/A

A late equaliser.
