‘Epic squared’: Scaloni hails Argentina’s World Cup repeat | World Cup 2026 news

“There was blood in the water, and we went,” the Argentina coach said of England’s late onslaught.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has hailed his team as they can’t say they are immortal after another victory saw them skip England to the finals of the FIFA World Cup.

Scaloni said on Wednesday that his team had won, as England came from behind after leading 1-0 in their semifinal in Atlanta, only to come from behind to win 2-1.

“I think this team plays really well when we’re in trouble,” Scaloni said. “We had a tough, tough game.

“There was blood in the water, and we went to look for it, and that’s how I felt in my heart.

“You have to keep going. We hit the crossbar. We hit the post, and they couldn’t go in. There were six or seven chances, but I’m happy with it, because the team fought until the end, and I think that’s important.”

It was the second time in the knockout stages that Argentina won after a late game following their last-16 escape against Egypt – a victory Scaloni described as “epic”.

Asked how to explain Wednesday’s win, Scaloni said: “Epic squared?”

Scaloni said the win, which sends Argentina into the final showdown against European champions Spain in New Jersey on Sunday, was a team effort.

“This team is hard to describe. It’s a show of unity, the relationship that we have, the fight to the end that we have,” said Scaloni.

The Argentine coach, who now has the chance to lead the South Americans to four consecutive titles after winning the Copa America on either side of the 2022 World Cup, said his team was not worried as they wanted to get back into the game.

He said: “I know these boys. “They don’t feel the weight on their shoulders.

“He is playing like he is seven or eight years old.
