Relationship OCD is typically divided into two categories: one is relationship-focused, where you question your feelings, and the other is partner-focused, which centers around potential flaws in your partner. Symptoms are primarily found in romantic relationships, but can affect other types as well, Doron said.

Life transitions such as going public, moving in together, or getting married can often be a trigger.

Sophia’s OCD focused on avoiding germs and worrying about her health. At worst, she washed her hands at least 30 times a day.

When she first met her boyfriend at a bar on Valentine’s Day, Sofia felt his presence and enjoyed spending time with him, but a month later, when things got more serious, she says her OCD kept her in touch and “completely shut down.”

Even small things like her boyfriend wearing clothes she doesn’t like or trying a hairstyle she doesn’t like can make her question their relationship.

“Even though I knew that wasn’t what I wanted to do, my mind was screaming at me to break up with him,” she said.

Although ROCD can affect anyone, some may be more vulnerable to it than others, Professor Doron said, adding that relationships growing up or our habits of perfectionism or overthinking can influence how we manage relationship doubts.

The proliferation of social media has also brought new pressures.

“Social media can definitely be a trigger for people with ROCD because it promotes romance and can make them question their own relationships,” Professor Doron said.

Sofia agrees: “Seeing seemingly perfect couples online creates hope when real relationships are less than perfect.”
