Expected historic showdown between Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal
Argentina will advance to next Sunday’s 2026 World Cup final against Spain on the back of a historic advantage in the only clash between the two sides in World Cup history.
This confrontation took place on July 13, 1966 at the “Villa Park” stadium in the English city of Birmingham, within the framework of the second group competition.
After a goalless first half, striker Luis Artem opened the scoring for Argentina in the 65th minute, but Jose “Perry” Martinez equalized for Spain just two minutes later. However, Artem came back and scored his second personal goal in the 79th minute to lead his country to a valuable victory.

The win was crucial for Argentina to reach the quarter-finals, as they finished the group stage in second place behind West Germany, while Spain were knocked out of the tournament in the first round.
But the tango dancers’ career was short-lived at the 1966 World Cup, where they lost to England (1-0) in the quarter-finals, while the hosts continued on their way to winning the title.
After 60 years, the showdown between Argentina and Spain resumes in the World Cup finals, after the Latin team knocked out England (2-1) in the semi-finals on Wednesday night, while Spain overcame its counterparts France (2-0).
