Conor Benn will challenge Ryan Garcia for the WBC welterweight title on September 12 in Las Vegas.
WBC champion Garcia is one of the sport’s highest-profile fighters and has engaged in a regular war of words with Ben in recent months.
Last year Benn moved up to middleweight to settle his feud with Chris Eubank Jr., son of his father Nigel Benn’s great rival Chris Eubank Sr.
Benn suffered the first defeat of his professional career when Eubank Jr outclassed him in their first fight at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but got his revenge in the November rematch when he dropped Eubank twice before taking a decision on the card.
Making his way back to welterweight, Bannon defeated Regis Progress on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s return at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April.
Benn has since targeted Garcia. “I only have one goal and that is to get the world title,” Ben said earlier Sky Sports.
“Finally, I’m in a position now where I’m really comfortable with life, but the work has become more relentless. The work has become more purposeful. There’s more purpose behind the work, and it’s hard to consider that I’ve always worked hard.”
He wants to emulate his father, a British boxing legend, by winning the WBC belt.
“He won that world title so my goal is to win that world title for me,” he said.
Garcia suffered an upset loss to WBA world champion Rolando Romero last year but bounced back to drop and beat Mario Barrios to claim the WBC 147lb belt in February.
In response to the announcement of the fight, Garcia said: “This is for Mexico and the UK. Both want a** clip of him. The clout monster will be killed”.
