Starmer has asked MPs to step down as British Prime Minister and pledged to support his successor Political Affairs

Andy Burnham, who is due to replace Starmer on Monday, will become the UK’s seventh Prime Minister in a decade.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged his “wholehearted support” to him successor, Andy Burnhamin a concerned appearance in Parliament as he prepares to hand over his leadership.

Facing his final session of Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) in parliament on Wednesday, Starmer said he wanted to see the next leader of the Labor Party do well.

“I want the Labor government to do well,” Starmer said. “I want our country to prosper. I will give my support privately when asked, not publicly before I am asked.”

Starmer announced his resignation last month after months of forced resignation following a list of scandals, mistakes and policy U-turns. He was prime minister for just two years despite leading his party to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election following 14 years of opposition from Labour.

Burnham is expected to be named Labor leader on Friday before being replaced by Starmer on Monday. He got a lot of support from 403 MPs of the party and major trade unions. The party’s strong majority in the 650-seat Parliament means he will become prime minister.

MPs from all parties wished Starmer well at the weekly PMQs, thanking him for his public service and asking him to ensure England win Wednesday’s World Cup final against Argentina and beat Spain in Sunday’s final.

The weekly PMQs session in the United Kingdom’s Parliament is often heavily contested with opposition parties attempting to impeach the Prime Minister. Wednesday’s session was calm, but there were no barbs exchanged.

Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch of the Conservative Party laughed: “They have been laughing for a long time that I have failed to control my party.

“Changing the cabinet is not a silver bullet. Yes, maybe the Labor Party’s problems have just started,” he said. “Fixing this country’s biggest problems will require tough decisions.”

Burnham, who was mayor of Greater Manchester for nine yearshe will be the seventh prime minister of the UK in ten years. He is expected to meet King Charles III on Monday.
