Coventry City are closing in on a deal worth more than £17 million for Eintracht Frankfurt defender Aurel Amenda.
The Switzerland centre-back will cost £15.4m initially, with a further £1.7m in add-ons, and is set to sign a four-year contract with the promoted Premier League club.
Amanda is understood to have been persuaded by a strong pitch from manager Frank Lampard and Coventry’s recruitment staff.
He was part of the Switzerland team that reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, although he did not appear in the tournament.
Amanda will be Coventry’s third signing of the summer following the winger’s arrival Loum Tchaouna from Burnley and midfielders Frank Onyeka, who has moved permanently from Brentford.
The Sky Blues are interested in signing goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton but are yet to agree a deal and Chelsea’s Philipp Jorgensen is being eyed as an alternative.
After renewing Lampard’s contract this summer, Coventry started pre-season with a 3-2 behind closed doors friendly defeat to Wimbledon.
They next face Northampton Town and Espanyol as they prepare for their first top-flight campaign in 25 years.
