Iran is going to close more trade routes as the US launches a new attack

Iran has threatened to block more trade routes in the region as the United States launches a new wave of attacks on military targets.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the coast of Hormuz would remain closed until the US stopped “aggressive acts”, adding that other regional oil and gas export routes could also be closed.

The warning came as the US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday morning that it had carried out drone, air and naval strikes against Iran, in addition to a seven-hour overnight operation.

US President Donald Trump has vowed to strike Iran’s bridges and power plants next week if the country does not return to talks.

“I’m going to save the energy targets for last, but eventually we’re going to hit the energy targets,” Trump said in an interview with Bret Baier in a special report released Tuesday night.

The escalating rhetoric comes after Trump said the 20% tariff he had threatened to impose on the Gulf of Hormuz would be replaced by “huge” trade and investment deals with Gulf states.

A renewed U.S. embargo on Iranian ports was imposed on Tuesday evening, stopping ships from transiting to Iranian ports and coastal areas.

In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that the US “must expect the closure of other oil and gas export routes that protect the interests of the US and its allies.” It is not clear which pathways it affects.

Meanwhile, Iran’s state media reported that the country’s military carried out separate attacks on US targets in Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain.

US allies have also claimed to have intercepted drones and missiles launched from Iran.
