Armagh manager Kieron McGeeney insists he will not read too much into his side’s emphatic Ulster semi-final win over Down despite a dominant performance in Clones.
Orchard County powered to a 3-33 to 0-14 win, trailing by just seven scores in each half, to book their place in the Ulster final against Monaghan on Sunday, May 17.
“It’s great to be in an Ulster final again,” McGeeney said.
“But in terms of the scoreline, I wouldn’t read too much into it. We knew it was going to go one way or the other last week (after the Donegal game), it would either give them some energy or give them some juice and their performance last week probably paid its toll.”
Armagh built on their high-scoring quarter-final win over Fermanagh, but McGeeney stressed how quickly things can change.
“Today’s score was good, but so was Down last week; these things can come and go.
“Some days, things can go your way. It was 5-2 when Greg McCabe had a chance to score, and if that went away, it could have taken the game a whole different direction.”
He also pointed to the evolving nature of the modern game.
“You’ve seen over the last 10 days that 12 or 14 point leads are not what they used to be.
“Teams can hit two-pointers now and turn things around very quickly, so you always have to be switched on.”
The second half saw the introduction of new faces, with Aaron O’Neill and Thomas Galvin making their Championship debuts.
“It’s good to see guys like Aaron and Thomas, I told (Aaron) when he came to pull the trigger, and he did and got a two-pointer.”
