This is a question that has been asked time and time again.
At least not to mark the various reunions Leedswinning the title in 1992 or Blackburn Rovers winning the Premier League three years later.
Batty was involved in both of those landmark achievements, but former Blackburn midfielder Mark Atkins has not been in touch with him since their playing days.
“We tried to take him to our dosa, but no one could hold him,” he said.
“He’s not that kind of person. Even if he lived five miles away, he wouldn’t come back because he’s really a very private guy.”
Apart from a rare trip to Elland Road to lay a wreath on the pitch in memory of his close friend Gary Speed, Batty has tended to stay out of the public eye since his tragic death in 2011.
Viduka, who hung up his boots and quietly opened a cafe in Croatia, can relate.
“In this day and age, everyone shows off everything they do at every moment, like what they had for breakfast,” he said. “Who cares?
“If there was one no It’s going to be, it was Bats.”
Rather than entertaining corporate guests, representing footballers or working in the media, Batty had always planned to devote his time to his family in Yorkshire after retirement.
It only added to the cult surrounding a former player Leeds Teammate Eric Bakke calls one of his “heroes.”
“If someone tackled you, Bats was always there to stand up for you,” he said. “You don’t find many players like that. You can always count on him.”
But Baty was more than a mere enforcer.
Standing his ground as well, and winning the ball back aggressively, the England international rarely relinquished possession.
Those qualities quickly struck the formerLeeds Midfielder John Sheridan, who was Batty’s “mentor” in his early days at the club.
“You’d think butter wouldn’t melt on his face when you looked at him,” he said.
“But he was tough as nails. He made the game look so easy by making the simple things look easy.”
