Tour de France results: Tadez Pogacar extends lead with stage win on Bastille Day

Tadez Pogacar extended his overall lead to more than three minutes as he raced clear to win the third stage of this year’s Tour de France.

After Monday’s rest day, the tenth stage gave closest rival Jonas Wingegaard the chance to close the gap to Le Lioran, where he beat Pogakkar in a two-man sprint to the line in 2024.

With the 166.6km mountain stage from Aurillac taking place on Bastille Day, the home fans were hoping French teenager Paul Sexus would be in contention.

But Pogakkar went solo with 15km to go and maintained that gap to cross the line 32 seconds ahead of Remko Evenepoel, with 19-year-old Sexus just behind him in third.

Vingard crossed 44 seconds behind Pogakkar in seventh, meaning the defending champion now leads the Dane by three minutes and 36 seconds in the general classification.

“We’ve been aiming for this stage for a long time,” said four-time Tour winner Pogakkar.

“Two years ago, Jonas beat me in the sprint fair and square. Today was the same, my legs were completely ruined for the finish, but yes, I enjoyed the day.”

Richard Carapaz went clear on the third-from-last stage climb of Puy Marie, but Pogaccar attacked on the final mountain before claiming his third victory on Bastille Day and his 24th stage win overall.

Vinzigaard led the chasing pack and although Evenpoel lost touch, he recovered on the short descent before the final rise to the line then took second as Vinzigaard gained more time in the final metres.

“It was an okay day for us, it could have been a lot worse, that’s for sure,” said Vinggard, a bike rider at Visma-Liz.

“My legs are getting better and I’m looking forward to longer climbs.”

British rider Tom Pidcock crashed on the Puy Meri descent but recovered to finish ninth on the stage and 10th overall.
