India won by six wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series
Brendon McCullum’s diminishing role as England’s white-ball coach began with a reminder of how much work the one-day team that lost to India had to do.
England were beaten by six wickets at Edgbaston in the opening match of the three-match series, two days after McCullum was sacked as Test coach.
England outclassed the visitors to win the T20I series 4-0, but it was a different India team, boosted by the inclusion of superstars Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill.
Gill was the main contributor in the chase of 259 runs.
The skipper was batting quietly on 80 until he retired with a hamstring injury, although he later clarified it was just cramp and he hoped to be fit for Thursday’s second game in Cardiff.
From 149-2, India quickly found themselves 160-4 and England had a chance. But Akshar Patel, who earlier took 4-62 with the ball, made the win easy with an unbeaten 57 and Washington Sundar 52 not out.
England had something to defend as they recovered from 107-6 with the fall of three wickets for three runs from six balls.
The game was in danger of not being extended deep into the afternoon with only 111 between Joe Root and Liam Dawson.
Dawson’s 68 was his highest score for England in any format, while Root was typically superb for his unbeaten 76.
Root was stranded as England lost their last four wickets for 30, leaving India with a target that was never likely to be enough.
