Trump to pay $5m in damages to writer E Jean Carroll for sexual assault and defamation.

US President Donald Trump has paid secretary E Jean Carroll more than $5m (£3.7m) in damages three years after she was found guilty of sexual assault and defamation in a civil suit, her lawyers have confirmed.

“Today, we are pleased to announce that she has received a jury award as a result of this verdict,” Roberta Kaplan, Carol’s attorney, said in a brief statement Tuesday.

Trump has been pushing to delay the payment to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision not to hear an appeal of the case. But last week, the judge handling the case ordered him to pay damages.

A representative for Trump’s legal team declined to comment on the payment.

A statement from Carroll’s legal team confirmed she was paid more than $5.62m – including the $5m judgment and accrued interest during the appeal.

Carroll, a former magazine columnist, claimed he assaulted her in the dressing room of a Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in the mid-1990s, and later denied the allegations in 2022 and blackmailed her on the Truth Social website.

In the year In 2023, a New York jury awarded Carroll damages for her claim. Trump has denied the allegations.

Trump deposited the damages into a court-controlled account shortly after the verdict, and it was held there when the appeals process ended.
