At least seven people, including a senior officer, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza’s Hamas-run police force, health and police officials said.
Witnesses told the BBC that an Israeli drone fired four missiles at a busy market in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza.
The Palestinian Authority’s Hamas-run Interior Ministry said local police station chief Col. Mohammad Marwan Salem and several other officers were among those killed in what it condemned as a “massacre.”
An Israeli military official confirmed the attack in the area and said it targeted “terrorists”.
Two more people were reportedly killed by Israeli fire in southern Gaza on Tuesday.
Medics told Reuters news agency that one person was killed and three others were injured in the airstrike.
Israel says it has hit a Hamas emissary.
In nearby Rafah, a 10-year-old boy named Muataz Abu Shaar was killed by Israeli gunfire, medics said.
The Israeli army has not yet released a statement about that incident.
Israel and Hamas accuse each other of daily violations of a ceasefire agreement reached in the Palestinian territories last October.
Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry said at least 1,110 people had been killed by Israeli gunfire since then, while the Israeli army said four soldiers had been killed in Palestinian attacks.
The war was sparked by a Hamas-led attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people and took 251 hostages.
Israel responded to the attack by launching a military operation in Gaza, during which more than 73,230 people were killed, according to the state’s Ministry of Health.
