Families are heartbroken after a British couple died in a wildfire in Spain

The family of a British couple who died in a wildfire in southern Spain have said they are heartbroken.

Pete and Fran Gillam, who lived in Bedar in the village hit hard by the blaze on Thursday, were confirmed dead by their family.

Their daughter Danielle Gillam-Kirton, from Sheffield, said in a Facebook post: “Mum and Dad are heartbroken to share that we have received confirmation from the police that they did not survive the fire.”

A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “It is supporting the affected British nationals and their families and is in close contact with the Spanish authorities.”

It is learned that the family has been searching for the couple since Thursday.

He texted Gillam-Kirton’s mother that night to say they were leaving, but the pair have not been heard from since.

Messages and calls have not been able to reach either parent, she said in an earlier Facebook post.

The couple’s daughter’s post continued: “We are still trying to come to terms with this terrible news and ask for some privacy and time while we process everything.”

“Thank you for all the love, support and prayers over the past few days. They have meant more to us than we can express.”
