Final Review – the coming-of-age drama gives itself a thrill | Video

This coming-of-age drama from Mexico feels unfamiliar, it’s the story of 18-year-old Eduardo, a young boy who finds himself in the big city. And yet nothing feels forced or fake – it’s at the forefront of fun and desire, Eduardo’s youthfulness and his need to live in a world of sex. There are also some great performances from his younger generation.

Alejandro Quintana plays Eduardo, a studious kid who arrives in Mexico’s second largest city, Guadalajara, wearing a smart shirt to take the university entrance exam. His phone is constantly ringing with texts and calls from his mother, whose harsh tone suggests disapproval, perhaps related to his sexuality. After the exam Eduardo meets student Mario, a Caravaggio-esque beauty who invites him to his home. But when he arrived – he was surprised! – Mario’s family threw him a birthday party. Which is only confusing briefly, since Mario is completely accepted at home.

In fact, one of the joys of this film is that it doesn’t scare the dark – an old man in a club with a side hustle vibe. All that Eduardo remembers is interesting. He also knows, watching everyone and everything as if he freezes time, keeping the details as he goes out at night with Mario and his friends. It is clear that this is the first time that Eduardo has not seen his parents, and he is unable to do so. There’s sex, tequila, a gay club, poppers, half a tattoo. Eduardo vomits on his shirt, peeing on his phone. The next morning, on the bus home, he is a changed man.

This is just a sneak peek of the video, and some viewers may think they’ve seen this kind of thing many times before, but the stories that come out are like snowflakes or fingers: no two are alike.
