Mexico’s Sheinbaum announces petition for US charges over ICE death | Immigration Issues

Mexico will ask prosecutors to file charges in US courts over the deaths of its citizens during immigration operations.

Mexico says it will seek prosecution in US courts after more than a dozen of its citizens have been killed by US immigration officials or died in prison.

On Monday, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the requests were being referred to US prosecutors, days after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a Mexican national. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on July 7 in Houston.

Salgado is the 17th Mexican national to die in such crimes or in the custody of immigration authorities since President Donald Trump returned to the White House last year.

“This is not an issue for the Mexican government,” Sheinbaum said in his daily statement. “I am asking all political parties, everyone, all Mexicans, to show solidarity with our fellow citizens of the United States.

Sheinbaum emphasized that although Mexico does not want to start a conflict with the US, it should not remain silent about the death of its citizens in order to maintain the country’s relationship with the Trump administration.

“We must raise our voice when there are violations of the human rights of our citizens.”

Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco was announced on Thursday that the government is planning to sue the US.

A very powerful answer

These requests are particularly difficult in Mexico, however, because of the deaths associated with Trump’s deportation. Mexican officials have attributed some of the deaths to homicides, and letters of protest to Washington have yielded no results.

But the complaint also comes at a difficult time between the two neighbors. Since taking office, Trump has used tariffs to squeeze Mexico’s economy, refused to renew The two countries have a close relationship on trade, and put Sheinbaum in a difficult position by agreeing CIA intervention against drug cartels in Mexico.
