US-based Mexican food chain Chipotle opens its first outlet in Mexico

Internet users are divided over Chipotle’s entry into Mexico.

“A bold move to sell Mexico the corporate version of Mexico,” said a commenter on X.

Another X post asked why Mexicans pay for Chipotle when they have “perfectly good, healthy food.”

“It makes no sense to[open]a place like Pizza Hut in Napoli,” said another.

“Subsequently, Panda Express opened its first mainland China location.

The move could be a major challenge to Chipotle’s plans to expand globally, one wrote, while another suggested the chain could do well as a “tourist novelty.”

The company plans to open up to 370 new restaurants globally this year, including new outlets in Singapore and South Korea.

Many commentators have compared it to American chains such as Taco Bell, and have tried to tap into the countries where their menus are inspired.

Taco Bell is one of the world’s largest fast food franchises, but it tried twice in Mexico and failed.
