World Cup 2026: Didier Deschamps predicts ‘spectacular’ France vs Spain semi-final

France boss Didier Deschamps is predicting a “spectacular” semi-final when his exciting side take on Spain at the heavyweight World Cup in Dallas on Tuesday.

Spain defeats Les Bleus in Euro 2024 semi-finals en route to Euro 2024 semi-final victory over France A nine-goal last-four thriller Last year in the Nations League.

“The past is in the past,” said Deschamps, who stepped down at the end of the tournament after 14 years in charge.

“They (Spain) have won in the past but I’m looking forward to tomorrow.

“We are on another level now. We want to be in the final.”

Two-time world champions France will become only the third nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals if they beat Spain on Tuesday (kick-off 20:00 BST).

West Germany in 1982, 1986 and 1990 and Brazil in 1994, 1998 and 2002 are the only countries to manage the feat so far.

Deschamps, who led France to the World Cup in 1998, led them to World Cup glory in 2018 before losing to Argentina on penalties in the 2022 final in Qatar.

He said, Spain will start the semi-final as favourites.

“They only scored one goal in six games,” added Deschamps.

“We know it can be a most spectacular game. (Spain boss) Luis (de la Fuente) and myself know how to defend and the quality of the two teams offensively, we think it’s going to be a spectacular game.”

Later, de la Fuente dismissed Deschamps’ claims that Spain were favourites.

“It doesn’t mean anything,” he said. “We have two great national teams facing each other.

“Whether we are favorites or not doesn’t mean more pressure for us. We have that pressure anyway because we want to do well for our country.”
