Colorado will decide whether a "gas rights" added to state law



A ballot measure written by a nonprofit organization would change the Colorado Constitution to establish the right of oil companies to sell methane gas and possibly force communities that have tried to eliminate gas equipment in new construction to back off from those efforts.

Advance Colorado, which wrote the measure and is leading the effort to gather enough signatures to add to the ballot, submitted its petition on June 25 to enact it. Work 177“The Right to Natural Gas,” to voters in the November state election.

The measure’s broad language—only 60 words in all—makes it difficult to predict how state agencies will act if it passes, and many worry that the change could hurt Colorado’s ability to meet its climate goals.
