The UK government has banned Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

Interior Secretary Shabana Mahmoud has declared that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) poses a threat to national security.

Mahmoud will use new government powers to ban support for a group linked to death threats and intimidation in the UK.

In her written statement to Parliament, she outlined how anything from expressing positive views to aiding and abetting the IRGC is now a crime punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

Two other groups, the Companions of the Islamic Movement of the Right (IMCR) and the Russian GRU (Foreign Military Intelligence Agency) volunteer group, were banned.

The Prime Minister promised to fast-track the National Security (State Concerns) Act in April this year, and the Criminal Prohibition Regulations can now be brought before Parliament.

“The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a central part of the Iranian government’s security structure, answering directly to the Supreme Leader of Iran,” Interior Minister Angela Eagle said in a written statement.

“Its role goes far beyond conventional military power. It includes intelligence activities, the use of proxy actors, and influence projection designed to advance the Iranian government’s objectives.”
